SUZY SOLIDOR: (18 December 1900 – 30 March 1983)

“Early in 1930 she became a popular singer and opened a chic nightclub called La Vie parisienne. She was openly lesbian.

One of the singer’s most famous publicity stunts was to become known as the “most painted woman in the world”. She posed for some of the most celebrated artists of the day including Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Raoul Dufy, Marie Laurencin, Francis Picabia and Kees van Dongen.”

Above is one of the most famous portraits of Solidor, by Tamara De Lempicka.

She was also photographed by Man Ray, and can be seen in the current Man Ray portraits exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, London.

‘Convicted by the Épuration légale as a collaborator, Solidor was forbidden to work for a few years after the war and her cabaret was closed. After a brief stay in the States, Solidor came back to France and opened a few new cabarets, first in Paris, then in Cagnes-Sur-Mer where she moved in 1966 and stayed until her death, at the age of 82.’

Camille Claudel (1864-1943) “was one of the rare female artists of the 19th century that could and did compete with the best male sculptors of her time.”

In 1883, Camille became acquainted with Auguste Rodin when he took over instruction of her class at the Académie Colarossi. Soon after Camille became his model, assistant and lover. “No other woman had such an intellectual, artistic and erotic impact on Rodin’s life like Camille Claudel.”

In 1892, after an abortion, Claudel ended the intimate aspect of her relationship with Rodin, although they saw each other regularly until 1898.

After 1905 Claudel appeared to be mentally ill. She destroyed many of her statues and was diagnosed as having schizophrenia. She accused Rodin of stealing her ideas and of leading a conspiracy to kill her. In 1913 after her father died her brother had her committed to a mental hospital. Over the years the hospital requested numerous times Claudel be sent home but her family refused. She remained institutionalized until her death in 1943. src1 & scr2

Yesterday, Artists, Models, iNK announced our second ‘Midnight..’ event: ‘The Midnight Drawing Feast’.

On Saturday 20th Oct, we’ll be holding a 3 hour group pose from 10pm until 1am for a limited number of artists at Sussex County Arts Club.

Once more Artists, Models, iNK will be bringing a 3 hour group pose to Sussex County Arts Club, Brighton, from 10pm-1am on Saturday the 20th of October.

Yesterday, Artists, Models, iNK created a ‘Regency Portrait Parlour’ as part of the Pink Fringe’s Pride Picnic.

It was a great alternative to the usual Brighton Pride escapades, with a number of original and wonderful performers braving the rain and clouds to show another way to celebrate Pride.

AMi posed as androgynous Regency ‘dandies’ and sat for anyone who wanted to draw us- we also welcomed people to sit and pose with us, using some of our dressing up box.

A really fun event- we hope to be back next year!

Set-up is getting underway, ready for Pink Fringe’s Pride weekend!

Artists, Models, iNK will be bringing our decadent and luxurious take on a Regency Portrait Parlour to Brighton’s New Steine Gardens from 12-6pm this Sunday, along with a whole host of wonderful performers.

This event is totally FREE, so do come along and draw us, sit with us and be drawn by others, and enjoy your post-Pride chill out.

Next Sunday, AMi are pleased to announce that we will be bringing some family-friendly life drawing to this year’s Brighton Pride celebrations.

We’ll be creating a Regency Portrait Parlour for those attending the Pink Fringe’s ‘Pride Picnic’ on Sunday the 9th September, 12-6.

Materials are provided, so come along and join our art picnic- you can draw us, draw each other and have a go at sitting to be drawn as well :)

'Midnight Drawing' - a post mortem.

Saturday evening saw AMi’s ‘Midnight Drawing’ event happen at Sussex County Arts Club, in Brighton.

10 artists arrived in the dark Mews leading to the club to candlelight and a chalk VII insignia. Once inside, easels were set up, boards and paper, masking tape, charcoal and oils, and at 10pm, the evening began.

The 6 models began a 3 hour pose, to a soundtrack of ticking clocks, chimes and bells. Every half an hour, each model held 3 separate short poses, accompanied by 3 songs chosen by each model.

At the sound of midnight, and Pink Floyd’s ‘Time’, all models and artists stopped for a break, where wine and absinthe were handed round, whilst all.

The final section saw the evening increase in intensity somewhat, as artists pushed themselves to finish their creations and the models held the long pose for just one more hour…

1am- the pose was over, and some wonderful work was created. It was great to see so many artists tackle the whole pose, as well as almost full sketchbooks of short abstract poses, and even some ipad drawings.

All of us here at Artists, Models, iNK were pleased with the way the evening went, and its safe to say all those in attendance enjoyed the event too.

Worth discussing is wether the creating of art at such a late hour, affecting the way any of us worked- both artists and models.

Yesterday saw our last weekly Artists, Models, ink session at the Artist Residence Hotel, Brighton.

Our model was Lucy, and she brought us poses inspired by Olga Desmond- the first woman to be onstage naked and moving- the poses incorporated drapery & uplighting to create sculptural forms.

It was a great session to end on, and here’s some shots of some the work people did:

Thanks to everyone who came along to these sessions- we’ve had a great time putting them together!

THIS SATURDAY- ‘Statuesque’ is our last Museum of the Muse session at the Artist Residence hotel.

Life model Lucy has been inspired to create a drawing session around Olga Desmond- reportedly the first woman to be naked onstage. She’ll be creating a series of poses based around the ‘tableaux vivants’ of the early 20th Century.
